Snow, ice and high mountains in Spain
Spain is the second most montainious land in Europe (after Switzerland). There are many relatively high ranges which cross the land north, south, east and west. One of this ranges is 'Sierra Nevada', where the highest mountain of the Iberian Peninsula is: Mulhacén, 3.482 meters. In fact, Sierra Nevada range is the third highest mountain range in Europe!
Next to Sierra Nevada, there are the very well know Pyrenees, with the Aneto (3.404 m), Monte Perdido (3.355 m), Vignemale, Middi d'Ossau, Posets, ....in total about 212 mountains above the 3.000 meters line.
Picos de Europa is also magnificant. And Sierra de Gredos, in midden Spain (not far from Madrid) is also impressive and rough. But everywhere you go in Spain there are mountains which raise high over the Spanish plateau.
The winter in Spain is between december and may (depending of the mountain range). In the mountains falls a lot of snow. The height of the Spanish ranges, together with the fact that the mountains are covered under the snow for a long period of the year, makes of Spain almost an alpine land. Here during the winter months we can practise alpinism almost like in the alps, but just with a little better weather and more kind conditions. The perfect training field during the winter for more difficult enterprises.
